The birth of a baby, whether it is the first-born or fifth, is a life-altering event. While most mothers are able to cope with this alteration in lifestyle, identity and health, there are many who don’t. Access to health care professionals and regular check-ups are often neglected in lieu of the pressing needs of the newborn.
According to the WHO, besides the initial post-birth contact with health care professionals, at least three additional postnatal contacts are recommended for all mothers and newborns, on day 3 (48–72 hours), between days 7–14 after birth, and six weeks after birth. Home visits in the first week after birth are recommended for care of the mother and newborn (source).
What is a postnatal wellness check-in?
A postnatal wellness check-in is a brief consultation which usually lasts no more than 90-minutes. During the session, the mental health consultant visits with the new mother and assesses her mental and physical health, discusses key topics such as sleep and nutrition, and counsels as necessary.
