Book Review: Haroun & Layla (Book2 in Salaam2Soulm8 Series)
I had the pleasure of receiving an advanced reader’s copy of Haroun & Layla, the much-anticipated second book in the Salaam2Soulm8 series by Tasneem Gaffoor. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book, Zahra & Yaseen, I was eager to dive back into this world, and Gaffoor and Wilman Fikker Publishing House did not disappoint!
In Haroun & Layla, we follow Haroun, Zahra’s charming and lively brother, as he navigates his love for gaming and his studies. Haroun is outgoing, family-orientated, and full of life – a character you can’t help but root for. Alongside him is Layla, a divorcee who carries the emotional scars of her previous marriage. Gaffoor doesn’t delve into the specifics of Layla’s past but leaves just enough room for the reader to piece together her trauma, making her journey all the more relatable and authentic.
I appreciated the subtle yet powerful way Gaffoor portrays Layla’s transformation throughout the novel. From grappling with the decision to open her heart again to confronting the judgmental whispers of an old-school society, Layla’s story feels deeply relevant to the struggles faced by many in today’s world. Haroun, too, is forced to reconcile his feelings when he learns about Layla’s past, adding a layer of emotional complexity to his character.
What I loved most about this book was how it breaks barriers. It speaks to the younger generation’s desire to redefine social norms while acknowledging the weight of traditional values. The interplay between Haroun and Layla is both heartfelt and inspiring, as they navigate the challenges of love, trust, and societal expectations.
Overall, Haroun & Layla is a captivating read that stays true to the spirit of the series. It’s ideal for both young adults and new adults, offering a fresh, relevant storyline that speaks to the heart. And for those who enjoyed Zahra & Yaseen, there’s a delightful glimpse into how Zahra and Yaseen are doing post-happily-ever-after, adding a sense of continuity that fans will appreciate.
Highly recommended for readers looking for a heartfelt, modern Muslim romance that blends tradition with the realities of today’s world.
