Book Review: Springrolls and Saturdays by Bilqees Hassen
Long overdue is this review which I have been meaning to share for a while. I am grateful to have received an advanced copy of Springrolls and Saturdays by Bilqees Hassen. My review follows… and with it, a fun way to get back into blogging mode.

Springrolls and Saturdays is a light and entertaining romcom set in Laudium, a well-known Indian suburb of Pretoria, famous for its blend of tradition, gossip, and ever-evolving trends. Bilqees Hassen captures this unique setting with humour and authenticity, drawing readers into a story that feels familiar yet fresh.
The novel centres on a typical ‘Laudium girl’ whose constant reminder to everyone (and herself) that she is “engaged” becomes both her shield and her mantra throughout the book. Initially worn like a badge of honour, her engagement status later becomes a warning to the male lead and, amusingly, a gentle tug-of-war within herself as she navigates shifting emotions.
What I particularly enjoyed was the way the book portrayed ‘typical Indian mindsets’, especially within tight-knit communities, and how the younger generation negotiates, challenges, and sometimes redefines those traditions. This makes the story relatable not only to readers from similar backgrounds but also to anyone interested in the intersection of culture, family expectations, and personal choice.
Bilqees Hassen has written a fun, easy-to-read novel that blends cultural nuances with romcom humour, making Springrolls and Saturdays an enjoyable pick for those looking for something light yet rooted in local flavour.
In conclusion: This story is perfect for readers who enjoy narratives that lean more into culture than religious values. At the same time, it offers an insightful look at how love, identity, and community intertwine.
That’s all from me for now. Stay tuned for more… and remember: ‘Just Dua It.’
